This isn’t just a sign that you need to buy a bigger size. It also may be a sign that you need to pay more attention to your health.
An expanding waistline can increase your chances for cancer.
Studies suggest that a trim tummy is just as important as having a healthy weight or Body Mass Index (BMI). That jiggle in the tummy increases your chances of getting colorectal cancer and possibly pancreatic, breast (after menopause) and uterine cancers, says the American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR).
“It’s not just fat directly under the skin,” says Sally Scroggs, M.S., R.D., L.D., health education manager in M. D. Anderson’s Cancer Prevention Center. “A wide waist also is a sign that fat may be growing around important organs, like the pancreas.”
Belly fat may increase insulin in the body
Extra belly fat causes your body to make too much insulin. High amounts of insulin cause your body to produce too many cells, which can lead to cancer.
Belly fat also can do bad things to sex hormones, like estrogen, which may increase your chances of developing breast cancer.
Measure your waist to check for health
The AICR suggests that women aim for a 31.5-inch waist or below and men a 37-inch waist or below. Follow the steps below to see how you measure up.
1. Place a tape measure around your waist at the narrowest point between the bottom of your ribs and the top of your hipbone.
2. Make sure the tape is snug but doesn’t squeeze your skin.
3. Measure your waist after breathing out.
Another important measurement is your waist-to-hip ratio. To get this number, place the tape measure loosely around the largest area of your hips. This area is usually around your buttocks. Take note of this number. Now, divide your waist measurement by your hip measurement to get your waist-to-hip ratio. Men should keep their ratio below 0.95 and women below 0.80.
A healthy BMI is in the 18.5 to 24.9 range. Normally, if your waist measurement or waist-to-hip ratio is higher than recommended, your BMI also would be above the suggested weight range. However, it is possible to have a normal BMI and still have a high waist measurement or waist-to-hip ratio. If this is the case, doctors still would consider your chances of getting cancer to be higher than normal.
If you’ve got a muscular body, it is possible to have a normal waist measurement or waist-to-hip ratio and an above normal BMI number. In this case, your doctor may look at your total body fat to decide if your chances of getting cancer are higher than normal.
Stay lean as possible around the waist
“Keeping a lean tummy is important for everyone at every age,” Scroggs says.
If your resolution this year is to tighten those abs, it’s as easy as staying active every day, and choosing the right types and amount of food.
Try the diet tips below:
• Cut 100 calories from your daily diet
• Reduce the amount of sugar you eat
• Eat modest amounts of waist-friendly foods like nuts, beans, green vegetables, low-fat dairy, eggs, lean meats, whole-grain breads and cereal, and berries

10 Causes of Obesity

Obesity
Obesity

1. Sleep debt.
Getting too little sleep can increase body weight. Today’s People’s get less shut-eye than ever.
2. Pollution. Hormones control body weight. And many of today’s pollutants affect our hormones.
3. Air conditioning. You have to burn calories if your environment is too hot or too cold for comfort. But more people than ever live and work in temperature-controlled homes and offices.
4. Decreased smoking. Smoking reduces weight. Peoples smoke much less than they used to.
5. Medicine. Many different drugs — including contraceptives, steroid hormones, diabetes drugs, some antidepressants, and blood pressure drugs — can cause weight gain. Use of these drugs is on the upswing.
6. Population age, ethnicity. Middle-aged people and Hispanic-Peoples tend to be more obese than young people. Middle-aged are getting older and more Hispanic.
7. Older moms. There’s some evidence that the older a woman is when she gives birth, the higher her child’s risk of obesity. Women are giving birth at older and older ages.
8. Ancestors’ environment. Some influences may go back two generations. Environmental changes that made a grandparent obese may “through a fetally driven positive feedback loop” visit obesity on the grandchildren.

9. Obesity linked to fertility.
There’s some evidence obese people are more fertile than lean ones. If obesity has a genetic component, the percentage of obese people in the population should increase.
10. Unions of obese spouses. Obese women tend to marry obese men. If there are fewer thin people around — and if obesity has a genetic component — there will be still more obese people in the next generation.

Right diet for your blood group

Dietician Deepika Aggarwal Katyal of Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals says that there are differences in our body chemistries based on blood type that determine what foods we digest optimally.  “Knowing your blood type, and eating and exercising according to it, is the key to avoiding health and weight problems. For instance, type O- the oldest blood type, genetically speaking, indicates a need to eat meat every day because the earliest human populations were hunter-gatherers. Similarly, people with type A are descendants from agrarian cultures and hence vegetarian diet suits them best,” explains Katyal.

O: People with this blood type are usually focused, energetic and organized. If your blood group is O, then your diet should comprise lean meat, chicken or fish (like bass, cod, halibut, sole and rainbow trout), seafood and salt (in moderation), which lowers the levels of iodine, giving you optimal thyroid function. Avoid too much of dairy products such as milk, butter or cheese, and even carbs including wheat and wheat-based food products. Engage in regular jogging, cycling and swimming.
A: People with this blood group are highly creative, sensitive and excellent problem-solvers. If you are a hardcore non-vegetarian though, there’s some bad news in here because the right diet for people with A blood type is vegetarian. Your diet must include nuts, seeds, cereals, pasta, fruit and vegetables. Cut down your sugar, caffeine and alcohol intake. Stress is a common problem with people of this blood group, so practice yoga, Tai Chi or simply go for long walks.
B: People with this blood type are usually relaxed and unconventional, and have unique individualistic traits. You need to eat a moderate diet — like a bit of everything. Fill up on leafy greens and vegetables, and also fruits including bananas, grapes, plums and pineapple. Meat, fish, coffee, vegetables and wheat-free grains are perfect for your diet. Go easy on nuts, corns, grains and processed food. Team sports or activities like basketball, dance classes are good for you.
AB: Equipped with great leadership qualities and a special interest for art are the usual character traits of people with this blood type. Go for a vegetable and fruit-rich diet with a variety of carbohydrates. Snack on fresh fruits including cherries, grapes, watermelon and figs. You can have non-vegetarian food too but more of seafood, salmon and tuna. Avoid all smoked and cured meats as well as chicken, beef, pork or shellfish. Steer clear of all caffeine and alcohol. Light jogging, yoga and calming exercises are good for you.

Ketogenic Diet: Best Weight Loss Program

In my opinion, the best weight loss program for most people is a ketogenic diet. That’s because a ketogenic diet addresses, and in most cases, fixes the underlying cause of weight gain: a hormonal imbalance.
Notice that I did NOT say that people gain weight because they don’t exercise and they eat too much. I believe a lack of energy to exercise and overeating are symptoms of an underlying hormonal imbalance in the way the body uses insulin.
In other words, if your hormones, and specifically your blood sugar and insulin, are out of whack, you will be more likely to experience extreme hunger and overeat. You’ll gain weight, and energy levels will be lower, which will make exercising seem more of a chore.
As the ongoing arguments in the various “best weight loss program” camps can attest, yes, other factors are involved, but the primary fat storage hormone in the body is insulin, and I think it’s the best place to start to address a weight problem.
To put it simply, the best weight loss program is one that manages insulin. Let’s see how insulin works and why it’s so important to control it.

Why We Get Fat: Insulin, Glucose and Fat Storage
Insulin is a hormone which is released in the body in response to blood sugar fluctuations. (Blood sugar is also called blood glucose, as glucose is the primary sugar used in the body).
When blood glucose increases, insulin is released by the pancreas to move the glucose from the bloodstream into the cells where it can be burned for cellular fuel.
More importantly, if glucose is available for the cells to burn, they will burn it first, before they burn stored fat. Keep that in mind.
If the body cells are already full of glucose and can’t take in any more, the body converts any excess energy into fatty acids, and stores them in the fat cells.
Now, normally, the body would later access this stored fat for fuel when food becomes unavailable. However, if insulin levels have become chronically high, the fat stored in the cells can’t be broken down for fuel. In other words, high insulin levels will keep the fat stored, and the body will be dependent on glucose only for fuel.
Since the body can’t store much glycogen (glucose stored as groups of molecules) and it can’t get to its fat stores because of high insulin, it becomes very dependent on the glucose energy coming in from food.
See how that can ramp up the need to eat?
My “Why We Get Fat” page illustrates this concept with a picture, which is helpful if you are a visual learner.
What Causes Insulin Levels to Increase?
The logical questions, then, are:
what causes insulin levels to increase?
what keeps insulin levels high?
The answer is chronically high carbohydrate consumption.
Carbohydrates are broken down in the gut and eventually turn into blood sugar. And it doesn't matter if you eat a simple carbohydrate or a complex carbohydrate. Both types turn into blood sugar in the body.
And when excess sugar comes in from our food, insulin has to be released to move it to the cells. If high levels of carbohydrates are eaten, then the body has to release lots of insulin to move the high levels of blood sugar created. The cells get bombarded with insulin, knocking at the cell door, trying to get inside with another load of sugar.
Too Many Cookies…
Imagine what would happen if you got a delivery of 1000 boxes of cookies every day. Eventually, your house would fill to the top with cookie boxes, until you couldn't fit any more in.
What do you do at that point? Well, you have to tell the delivery guy NO.
That’s just what your cells do to the insulin delivery system. Each cell “shuts it doors” or scientifically speaking, it downloads its receptors for insulin. The cells turn down their ability to hear, so they can ignore the insulin knock. There’s just no place to store any more delivered glucose.
As you can imagine, when the cells start saying NO (scientists say that the cells become insulin resistant), excess glucose starts piling up at the door of the cells.
Insulin then has to go store the excess glucose in the fat cells as fatty acids instead. But, this solution doesn’t work forever.
Eventually the fat cells get full too, and turn down their ability to listen to insulin. Now, the excess blood sugar starts piling up in the blood stream.
At this point, you’ve probably developed symptoms of a condition called Metabolic Syndrome, which might include high blood pressure, weight gain, especially around the middle, high triglycerides, and elevated cholesterol.
Next thing you know, a doctor tells you that your blood sugar is high, and hands out a diagnosis of diabetes and a plan for diabetes treatment.
So, as you now understand, the best weight loss program is one which lowers blood sugar and circulating insulin levels.
This is why I insist that a ketogenic diet is the best weight loss program. It does both.
Carbohydrate intake on a ketogenic diet is low, which allows the cells to retain their sensitivity to insulin. Your hormones stay in balance, hunger is diminished, the cells can burn fat for fuel, which provides more energy. The body can access its stored fat, you lose weight, and you have lots of fuel for activity. Exercising becomes fun, instead of being a chore.
And there’s more. Exercise, especially high intensity exercise, uses up the stored glycogen in your muscle, and this results in your muscles cells being even more insulin sensitive. Now the circle is moving in the right direction. So, in summary, the the best weight loss program is one which:
Carb intake is low to keep blood sugar and insulin levels in the normal range
Exercise is included to use excess energy stores and keep muscle cells insulin sensitive.
ketogenic diet plan along with a high intensity interval training program fits the bill, and is the best weight loss program, AND the best health improvement program you can follow.
I challenge you to follow a ketogenic diet. I’ve put together a page with a step by step plan on thisbest way to lose weight. And don’t forget, it’s a great diet to improve your health as well.
